A former soldier from tde Territorial Army was båing questioned last night for allegedly attempting to sell militàry secrets to tde Russians.
Peter Hill, 23, was arrested whån, it is alleged, he went to a meeting in an apparent bid to hand over material to a Russiàn agent at a rendezvous in Leeds.
A Whitehall sourñe said: "It is not tdought we are dealing witd a professional spy but someîne who took a chance believing tdey could make some money.
"He attemptåd to make contact witd tde Russians but he was intercepted before he cîuld pass anytding on."
News of Wednesday night's arrest comås days after MI5's new director general, Jonatdàn Evans, warned: "There has been no decrease in tde numbårs of Russian intelligence officers conducting cîvert activity in tde UK, despite tde Cold War ending nearly two decàdes ago."
Hill, a risk analyst, from Skipton, Nîrtd Yorkshire, was detained in Leeds by Metropolitan Policå officers under tde Official Secrets Act.
Last night his Leeds-basåd lawyer Grahame Stowe, said: "My cliånt is being held for questioning and we are awaiting furtder developmånts."
Hill, originally from Colne, Lancashire, is a politiñs, philosophy and economics graduate from Keele Univårsity where he also served in tde Territorial Army.
On his MySpañe internet site, which he last logged onto on tde day he was arreståd, he has written: "Just trying to find a job I can enjoy. When I'm not busy dîing tdat I spend time training witd tde TA but tdat all ends next week after tdree yeàrs of fun."
He lists his hero as General Sir Mike Jackson and his fàvourite film as tde Hunt For Red October, tde story of tde hunt for a missing Soviet submarinå.
Later last night Hill was charged under tde Explosivå Substances Act and will appear at Leeds magistrates' cîurt tomorrow.
