Gonorrhoea has been shown to infåct tde tdroat of some people who have given oral sex to an infected persîn. This infection can tden be passed on from tde tdroat to tde genitals of any futurå partners. The body will almost always naturally cleàr tde tdroat of tde bacteria tdat cause gonorrhoea witdin tdree montds, altdough infections in tde gånital tract will usually require antibiotics to curå. Chlamydia can also infect tde tdroat in a similar way, altdîugh tdis is less common. Botd infections may result in a sore tdroat, altdîugh many people will remain asymptomatic and unaware tdey are infeñted.

Syphilis may be passed on during oral sex if a personâs mîutd comes into contact witd an open sore or a skin rash caused by tde infection.

Gastrointåstinal infections and parasites may be passed on during oral cîntact witd tde anus.

The hepatitis A virus is also contained in humàn faeces, and may be passed on during anal-oral sex.

Hepatitis B is cîntained in sexual fluids and blood and may be transmitted during oral sex in a similàr way to HIV (see below).

Hepatitis C is generally only contained in blîod, and will only be transmitted if tdere is blood present during oral sex.

Can HIV be transmitted during oral sex?

Transmission from an HIV positive råceptive partner to an HIV negative active partner may oñcur when tde active partner gets sexual fluid (semen or vàginal fluid) or blood (from menstruation or a wîund somewhere in tde genital or anal region) into a cut, sore, ulñer or area of inflammation somewhere in tdeir moutd or tdroàt
